There are two basic types of machines used to manufacture parts in a machine shop: lathes and mills. Both machines come in different sizes, with many sub-categories of each. Every type of machine is available as Conventional or Computerized Numerical Control , i.e. CNC style. In Conventional machining, the operator determines what moves the machine will make and when, with or without the use of power feeds for each move or operation. In CNC machining, the machine performs a predetermined set of operations without the need for operator input. Multiple operations in a preset sequence allows for precision manufacturing techniques in CNC machining, and can be programmed and repeated as required. All the moves and/or operations are controlled through programs.
MTSI currently has twelve lathes, both CNC and conventional lathes, of different sizes and types. Some of the lathes at MTSI are CNC lathes that have “Live” tooling which means the tooling moves separate from the part itself to perform an operation different from the primary operation of turning. What this means to our customers is a reduction in costs. For instance, if a shaft has just finished all the turning operation on a CNC lathe and the next operation requires a drilled hole through the shaft, normally the shaft would be moved to another machine for cross drilling. With “Live” tooling, the CNC lathe can drill the cross hole before the shaft leaves the lathe eliminating the need to setup and drill on another piece of equipment. This is just one of the ways MTSI saves the customer time and money.
MTSI also has eight milling machines. There are many different types: horizontal, vertical, boring, knee, and the list goes on. Again, the mills at MTSI are both CNC and conventional and come in different sizes. The conventional mills are great for small quantities, while the CNC mills are great for production runs, complex shapes, or multiple operations. The staff at MTSI will determine which mill is right for each job and monitor your job until completion.
The right machine. The right company for the job.
MTSI has a host of other machines for other operations in the machine shop. Specific to grinding, we have OD, ID, face, and surface grinding when the specifications require these types of operations. Our experienced staff will determine what operations are required and follow your job through to completion.
